Some students of the Osun State University, Uniosun Ikire campus have staged a peaceful protest in support of a lecturer who was accused of flogging them.

The lecturer, Dr. Sesan who teaches in the English Department has been heavily criticised by Nigerian for flogging his students in a video that has gone viral.

However, while Nigerians are condemning the lecturer for the act, the 200 level students of the English Department have come out to defend their lecturer.

The student said the viral video is a dramatic clip they made and that Dr. Sesan only played the role of a lecturer beating some students in the clip.

One of the protesting students, Amodu Aramide who spoke to newsmen said the video was a drama and that the lecturer did not commit any offence.

In their bid to exonerate the lecturer from being punished by the management, the students carried placards with such inscriptions as; ”free Dr. Sesan”, ”It was a rehearsal not a class”, ”It was a rehearsal not a class, he has done nothing wrong”; ”Dr Sesan is not at fault”.

Student leader also released a statement to defend Dr Sesan

Moreover, the President of the National Association of English and Literary Studies in Osun State University, Comrade Akala Sunday also released a statement to back up the protest.

The statement reads in part:

I am not writing this to favour anybody neither do I mean to mystify this issue but it is necessary to let the whole world know that what happened in the four-seconds video was part of the three-hour rehearsal. It was not in a lecture room but a theatre rehearsal and discipline is very important during rehearsal, in fact some scholars ague that discipline is part of ethics of rehearsal.

In regard to this, the entire National Association of Students of English and Literary Studies (NASELS) Uniosun chapter are urging people to do their research thoroughly and get the fact before they react to the matter and stop spreading rumour that can tarnish the image of this prestigious department and Osun State University at large.
