The Vice-Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Prof. Abel Idowu Olayinka, has reiterated the commitment of the University management to ensuring the best of education based on quality assurance with character for the students of University of Ibadan.
Prof. Olayinka made this statement while delivering his welcome address themed “An Overview of the 2015-2020 Strategic Plan: Milestones, Challenges and Prospects” at a two-day workshop on the 2018 University of Ibadan Monitoring and Evaluation, Tracking the 2015-2020 Strategic Plan: Engaging Global Challenges of Innovation, Competitiveness and Excellence for a Post 70-Year University of Ibadan on Wednesday, 1 August, 2018.
The VC in his remarks said “Students are the life blood of a university. We support our students to excel by helping to raise their aspirations, helping to achieve their potentials and helping to achieve their personal goals. We prepare our students to perform better as part of student-centered educational enterprise.”
Prof. Olayinka further stressed that the University ensures that its students are enquiry-led learners, recognised by employers for their intellectual strength, adding that in the area of in-depth knowledge of subject, ” we will motivate our graduates to think critically and reason practically, to communicate effectively to work in a team and to solve problems.”
Prof. Olayinka furthermore asserted that UI students are trained to have innovative, creative and entrepreneurial mindset that empowers them to take initiative, be resourceful, and persevere in the face of challenge, adding that this requires the University to create and sustain an educational environment that inspires and equips the students to become innovative thinkers, value-creators and entrepreneurial leaders.
The VC savoured the joy of the newly accredited programmes of the UI Distance Learning Centre by the National Universities Commission (NUC).
The three programmes recently approved by NUC are B.Sc Sociology, B.Sc Computer Science and B.A. History while the six old programmes revalidated by NUC are Adult Education, Guidance and Counselling, Library, Archival and Information Studies, Educational Management, Communication and Language Arts and Statistics. The existing programmes are Social Work, Economics, Psychology, Political Science, English and Philosophy.
With this development, according to Prof. Olayinka, “We are able to run a total of 15 programmes, the largest for any dual mode university in the country.”
In his keynote address, a first class economist and immediate past Chairman, Board of Directors, University of Ibadan School of Business (UISB), Prof. Ademola Ariyo commended the University management for the mid-term review of the five year strategic plan for an enhanced performance, saying that the workshop is for self-examination and remedial action.
The event had in attendance some principal officers of the University, Vice-Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Prof. Idowu Olayinka; Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Kayode Adebowale and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Innovation and Strategic Partnerships), Prof. Olanike Adeyemo and others.
