On Saturday, 17th of November, 2018, the long awaited debut of the Union of Campus Journalists, University of Ibadan J-6 award for the Most Outstanding Female Campus Journalist was finally unveiled at the Union’s Luncheon.
The award adornment, which occurred at the New Senior Common Room Tedder Hall, according to an earlier released newsletter of the Union in September, “is aimed at gearing up the true spirit of Journalism in female gender.”
However, amidst the luncheon Miss. Babatunde Aishat, the 2017/2018 Awo Hall Press Editor-In-Chief was unveiled as the premier winner of the maiden edition of the J-6 award for the most outstanding female campus journalist. Consequently, the winner of the award, Miss. Babatunde Aishat was adorned with a plaque and a sum of #30,000.
In his comment on winner of the award, Mr. Alao Abiodun said Miss. Babatunde Aishat was deservedly found outstanding of the shortlisted three nominees for the award that “was fiercely contended” with several entries. Nonetheless, the three nominees which were disclosed include – “Taiwo Olaweyinmi, Babatunde Aishat, and Olamide Tejuoso.”
In addition, Miss. Babatunde Aishat while reacting to her unexpected adornment, she said “I really don’t know what to say. It came all as a surprise; It was challenging.” She however acknowledged her friend, Mr. Akinpelu Yusuf, who she said encouraged her to take the bull of the challenge by the horn.
While discussing the award, Mr. Alao Abiodun, one of the J-6 explicitly stated that the J-6 constitutes “Ajayi Iyinoluwa, Haleem Olatunji, Adekunle Adebajo, Kanyinsola Olorunisola, Femi Adesope, and him, Alao Abiodun.”
He further noted that the aforementioned J-6 were once University of Ibadan vibrant Campus Journalists, who “worked cooperatively together” while on campus. Speaking of the precedent orientation of the J-6 that gave birth to the #30,000 worth award, Mr. Alao Abiodun said that “We(J-6) discovered a decline in ladies involvement in campus journalism.” Nevertheless, according to him, the refined product of their discovery is to raise the standard of female active participation in campus journalism via the medium of J-6 award for outstanding female campus journalist.
