The management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has suspended all Student Union Leaders (SUG executives) who participated actively in the institution’s last protest that led to a shutdown of the school for many weeks.
It was gathered that the suspension ranges between two to four semesters each depending on the involvement of the individual.

One of the suspended leaders described the action as “a slap to Nigerian students” adding that the leaders were in deep consultation.

“What they want is an SUG that will be yes sir SUG to them,” he said on condition of anonymity.

“We will pursue this to the end. They want to tarnish this school with their own hands. There was no proper investigation but they just started sending letters of suspension.

“Even some of the issues that led to the protest was entirely the fault of the management but they are looking for scape goats and primary school students in a university.”

It would be recalled that the school was closed on Friday, April 8, following a protest, led by the SUG, against the blackout and water scarcity that plagued the university for few weeks.

The protest which began around 9am on Thursday, saw students who took to the streets on the main campus and shut the gates of the school to demand solution to the lack of basic social amenities on the campus.

A high powered meeting of the Vice-Chancellor, Head of Departments and other principal officers was going on in the Senate building when the students came and held them to ransom till 8pm.

As a way of preventing the breakdown of law and order the Senate of the institution ordered all students to vacate the school premises and invited to ensure that the students were evicted from school.

On resumption, weeks later, the students were asked to sign an undertaken to be of good behaviour while the school was considering proscribing the student union.
