Strong desire for University education by the Nigerian youths, at the detriment of other educational institutions, has been described as a symptom of dysfunctional structure in the nation’s education sector.
The foundation Vice Chancellor of Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun and Provost, College of Engineering and Environmental Studies, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ogun State, Prof. Olukayode Oyesiku stated this at the 4th Alumni Distinguished Lecture of TASUED National Alumni Association held at the Ijagun Campus of the University.
While delivering the lecture titled: “REPOSITIONING NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES: THE ROLE OF STAKEHOLDERS”, Prof. Oyesiku blamed government for placing too much emphasis on University education at the detriment of other institutions, especially technology-driven institutions.
Prof. Oyesiku, however, blamed the crises in the nation’s education sector on poor funding which he said often results to incessant strike action, lack of qualified teachers, brain drain and shortage of teaching aids among others.
In her remarks at the occasion, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Oluyemisi Obilade thanked Prof. Oyesiku for laying a solid foundation on which members of the University Community are treading today. She commended him for continuously playing a stakeholder’s role since he left office as the VC of the University.
In his welcome address, the President of the National Alumni Association, Mr.Buraimo Saheed Olaiya noted that the major responsibility of the Association was to place the University above all other institutions in all ramifications, especially in the area of quality education.
Mr. Buraimo, therefore, called on all alumni of the University to join hands with him in order to, collectively, build the institution that made them.
Distinguished awards were later presented to pioneer executive members of the Association, which included the pioneer President, Mr.Tajudeen Ola Uthman.
Other dignitaries at the occasion included a former member of the National Assembly, Sen.Kola Bajomo, Hon.Adebowale Ojuri (Member, Ogun State House of Assembly) as well as members of the Management team of the University.
