University of Ibadan, over the years has been a stepping stone and mentor to many Universities in Nigeria and abroad. Established in 1948, it has the twelveth Vice Chancellor, Professor Abel Idowu Olayinka who assumed office in Dec 1, 2015 after the erstwhile (11th) Vice Chancellor and Federal Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole.

During a visit of the founder and presiding Bishop of Victory International church, Rehoboth Cathedral and Proprietor of Dominion University, Bishop Taiwo Adelakun on May 7, 2019, the Vice Chancellor of University of Ibadan, Professor Idowu Olayinka admonished budding private Universities in Nigeria “to run on high quality of moral and academic principles, speaking further that “this is the cutting edge of the University of Ibadan which does not compromise merit and quality in all its affairs.

He noted that high quality principles both in moral and academic training of students would go a long way to distinguish any private university that could embrace the ideas. While testifying to the quality of the Institution, he pointed during his foreign experience that University of Ibadan had gained reasonable values both home and abroad

He also gave a clue to the culture of the institution and admission process which has not gone ahead of better factor to enhance excellence. He said “In UI, our admission process is merit driven. The National Universities Commission (NUC) allows us to admit up to 8,000 candidates but we decide to admit only about 4,000 because we are conscious of quality factor, more so we want every 100-level student and the finalists to be accommodated on campus, whereas we have just 9,000 bed spaces. The underlining factor is our culture of excellence and the need to maintain high quality standards”, assuring Dominion University of partnership and mentorship that will greatly assist the new university.

Bishop Taiwo Adelakun had also said earlier that of the conditions given by the National Universities Commission during approval presentation, University of Ibadan would be the mentoring institution.

He said further that “Consequently, we are here soliciting your support in three areas including having your academic staff in our school as Adjunct Lecturers, giving us some of the students who applied to UI but could not be admitted as a result of over subscription and granting us access to your library”.

According to Adelakun, “Prof. Egbokhare, Francis Oisaghaede of Department of Linguistics and African Languages, University of Ibadan, has been appointed as the pioneer Vice Chancellor of Dominion University”, adding that he has been directed to establish a University to address the rot of education.

The Dominion University will commence academic session in October, 2019 when the ministry will celebrate her 30th anniversary, with nine Departments and 15 programmes.

In an interview with the Proprietor on TRIBUNE on January 17, 2019, he disclosed courses and some other short term courses and training to start with. He said “Some of the courses that will be offered in the first session of the university will include Cyber Security, Information and Communication Technology, Nursing, among others. Other courses related to Sports and Physical Health Education will be included probably in the second or third session. We are bringing in innovations and then we are going to be running some short diploma courses, as well as on-the-job training for organisations that want their staff to improve on their skills.”
