Four gunmen on Monday evening, abducted the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun, Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, Prof. Olusoga Olusanya.
He was said to have been abducted along the Multiple Bridge area, in Ososa, Odogbolu Local Government area of the state.Our correspondent learnt that Olusanya was returning to Ijebu Ode from an official assignment in Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta when he was abducted on the way by gunmen.
A source said he was at FUNAAB as an external invigilator at the ongoing post-graduate examination. The four gunmen who were in a vehicle, were said to have overtaken the official car Olusanya was travelling in with his driver and blocked it at a failed section of the Odogbolu – Ijebu Ode-Ore-Benin Expressway. He was abducted along with his driver who was later dropped by the roadside at Odogbolu.
The Vice-Chancellor, TASUED, Prof. Oluyemisi Obilade, could not reached for comment on the matter. She did not pick calls made to her telephone by our correspondent, neither did she acknowledge a text message sent to her.
It was obvious at the TASUED main campus that many of the principal officers were still in distress over the development. It was gathered that the news of the abduction of Olusanya forced the Senate of the institution to abruptly postpone the emergency meeting which was scheduled for Tuesday.
Obilade, who was said to have arrived the school premises around 10.40am, organised a prayer session with some members of staff, calling for God’s intervention. She also urged the abductors to release the man to return home safely and in good health immediately. Speaking on the development, the TASUED branch chairman, Academic Staff Union of Universities, Dr. Akinsola Akinsanya, expressed shock that the DVC could be abducted in such a manner.
He decried the rampant cases of abduction and kidnapping, stressing that this had shown the level of insecurity in the country. He called on concerned authorities to urgently address the trend. Akinsanya said, “We in ASUU called for unconditional release of Prof. Olusanya
The state police spokesman, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the abduction of Olusanya, but said crack detectives and the directorate of the State Security Service were jointly working to secure his release.
He said, “It is true that Prof. Olusanya was abducted. Policemen accosted his driver who was stranded around the Multiple Bridge in Ososa area. “He told the policemen that his boss was abducted by four gunmen. We learnt the abductors had contacted the victim’s family and had demanded for a certain amount.”
Adejobi appealed to the family of the victim to have trust in the police and the DSS to do their job.
